Designing Data Tables
Data tables are among the most information-dense UI components. Good table design helps users scan, compare, and find data quickly. Bad table design overwhelms users with visual noise.
Column Alignment Rules
Numbers should be right-aligned so decimal points line up, making magnitude comparison effortless. Text should be left-aligned (or start-aligned for RTL support). Dates can be left-aligned when they start with the most significant unit (2024-03-15) or right-aligned when they end with it (15/03/2024). Status indicators and actions center-align well.
Visual Hierarchy
Use alternating row backgrounds (zebra striping) with very subtle contrast โ 2-3% lightness difference is enough. Heavy borders between every cell create visual noise. Use horizontal rules only, with heavier weight on the header border. Sort indicators should be visible but not dominant. Active sort columns can use a slightly different background tint.
Responsive Tables
Tables don't fit mobile screens. Solutions from least to most disruptive: horizontal scroll with a sticky first column (preserves structure), card layout where each row becomes a card with label-value pairs (changes mental model), or priority columns that hide less important columns on small screens (loses data).
Density and Spacing
Compact tables (24-32px row height) suit data-heavy applications where users need to scan many rows. Comfortable tables (40-48px row height) work for general-purpose applications. Touch targets in tables need at least 44ร44px hit areas, which may require larger row heights on touch devices.
Empty and Loading States
Empty tables should show a helpful message explaining why there's no data and suggesting an action (create a record, adjust filters, try a different date range). Loading states should show skeleton rows rather than a spinner โ this preserves the layout and gives users a preview of the table structure.
